Stop and Shop*

Supermarket History

Stop and Shop* supermarket is the largest chain of food retailers based in New England. It operates more than 355 supermarkets and combination supermarket-general merchandise stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. Stop and Shop's* roots go back to 1892 in Boston's North End. According to the company's web site one shop, the Economy Grocery Shop, became a multiple store company in 1914, known as the Economy Grocery Stores Company it was headquartered in Somerville, Massachusetts. In 1918 the company brought a new concept that began in Southern California to retailing in New England: the self-service market. The concept proved to be successful because it was based on customer appeal to rock-bottom prices, increased product selection, self-service (the customer selected the items and the store clerk checked them out at a cash register), and intensive marketing.

Prior to the self-service market the Economy Grocery Stores Company followed the pioneering efforts of the A&P chain’s introduction of the "economy store," using efficient management and smaller store size to offer lower prices on a cash-and-carry basis--no credit, and no home delivery. Following World War II the company went public and became Stop n Shop*, Inc and in turn furthered the innovation in supermarket shopping by introducing the Superstore in 1982, the first being built in Springfield, Massachusetts. Known as Super Stop and Shop*, the stores were immense, averaging over 55,000 square feet in size, with all the traditional supermarket offerings, plus bakeries, pharmacies, expanded deli departments, cafes, salad bars with some stores featuring a bank, expanded liquor and beer, video rentals, etc. Superstores were planned around a "street of shops" concept of well-defined and suitably decorated segments of the store defined for each class of product. The butcher, bakery, deli, cheese shop, general merchandise, fruit stand, etc were under one roof much like the 1800s when families shopped a series of neighborhood stores, each specializing in a different products.

In 2002 these superstores were further enlarged and expanded to offer full service departments such as Foods-To-Go, full-service pharmacy, florist, salad bar, full-service branch banking, bakery, delicatessen, and gas stations, photo processing , portrait studios, bookstores, and small appliances.

Stop and Shop* has introduced many technological innovations to the supermarket industry including internet connected Peapod home delivery and handheld iPhone scanning capacity for customers.

Today Stop n Shop* is headquartered in Quincy, Massachusetts and employs over 57,000 people and has sales of over 12 billon dollars a year.
